Abstract

This study aimed to examine the relationship between university students’ leisure time management and their awareness of the physical, psychological, and social benefits of recreational activities, as well as to determine whether these variables differed according to gender and faculty group. A quantitative research approach and relational survey design were employed. The sample consisted of 1,065 university students, including 608 females and 457 males. Of the participants, 118 were students in the Faculty of Sport Sciences and 947 were students from other faculties. Data were collected online using a Personal Information Form, the Leisure Time Management Scale, and the Recreational Benefit Scale. Descriptive statistics, independent-samples t-tests, and Pearson correlation analyses were conducted. Statistical significance was set at p<0.05.The findings indicated significant gender differences in the physical and psychological subdimensions of recreational benefit. Female students had higher mean scores than male students in both dimensions. Regarding leisure time management, a significant gender difference was found only in the Programming subdimension, in which male students had higher mean scores. Students from the Faculty of Sport Sciences had significantly higher scores than students from other faculties in the physical, psychological, and social dimensions of recreational benefit, as well as in the Goal Setting and Methods and Evaluation subdimensions of leisure time management. Furthermore, positive and statistically significant correlations were observed between the subdimensions of leisure time management and recreational benefits. These findings indicate that leisure time management and awareness of recreational benefits are related constructs among university students. However, given the relational nature of the research design, the findings should not be interpreted causally.
