Abstract
This study explores the safety risks encountered in recreational canoeing activities and the management approaches adopted to mitigate these risks, based on participant perspectives. The data collected were analyzed through qualitative methods and categorized into themes and subthemes. As nature-based sports are directly dependent on environmental variables, risk management in canoeing activities is of paramount importance. According to participant statements, sudden weather changes, strong water currents, and wave movements are the most frequently encountered natural risks. These conditions often necessitate emergency decisions such as tour cancellations or route modifications. In addition, equipment failures, lack of proper safety gear, and participants” lack of training have been identified as significant human-induced safety concerns. The insufficient or incorrect use of safety equipment was noted as a primary factor contributing to accidents. Findings also reveal institutional deficiencies, including the absence of preventive strategies and the lack of systematic risk assessment processes. Many participants emphasized the importance of conducting regular risk analyses and increasing pre-activity training focused on emergency scenarios as key factors in improving safety management. In conclusion, this study highlights that the risks inherent in nature-based recreational activities cannot be managed solely through observation but require a structured and proactive approach. Adopting multi-dimensional risk management strategies is essential for enhancing the overall safety of canoeing activities.
