Abstract

The aim of this research is to examine athletes’ coping strategies with stress and their anger expression styles, and to determine the relationships between them. The general survey model, one of the quantitative research methods, was used in the study. The population of the research consists of licensed athletes in the provinces of Rize and Trabzon. The sample consists of 367 licensed athletes selected from the population through the simple random sampling method. As data collection tools, the “Demographic Information Form,” the “Inventory of Coping with Stress,” and the “State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory” were used. The data obtained were analyzed using SPSS and JASP software; frequency and kurtosis-skewness values were examined in preliminary analyses, and independent sample t-test, two-way analysis of variance and Pearson correlation tests were applied in hypothesis testing. In the analyses, significant differences were found in athletes’ coping strategies with stress: in the helpless approach according to gender; in the self-confident and helpless approaches according to age; and in the self-confident and submissive approaches according to type of sport. In athletes’ anger expression styles, significant differences were found in anger control according to gender, and in anger control, anger-in, and anger-out according to age; no significant differences were found according to type of sport. In addition, weak and moderate positive significant relationships were found between athletes’ active coping styles and anger control, and between passive-emotion-focused coping styles and both anger-in and anger-out. As a result, it can be stated that athletes’ ability to cope positively with stress has a positive effect on their anger expression styles.
