Abstract

The probability of encountering students with various differences is much higher in today’s educational settings than in the past. With the widespread adoption of inclusive education, inclusive teaching practices have become an important issue. The aim of this study is to determine and compare the opinions and experiences of English teachers working in secondary education in Türkiye and Germany regarding inclusive teaching practices. The study was designed as a case study, one of the qualitative research designs. The study group was selected using the criterion sampling, a type of purposeful sampling, and consisted of 14 English teachers working in secondary education, 7 of whom worked in Türkiye and 7 in Germany during the 2023-2024 academic year. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using content analysis. The qualitative data analysis software MAXQDA 2020 was used to facilitate the analysis process. According to the findings, the teachers had knowledge of and experience with inclusive education. Their definitions of inclusive education were grouped under three sub-themes: sensitivity to diversity, equality of opportunity, and combating discrimination. However, almost all of the teachers stated that the aims of inclusive education are not fully reflected in practice. The majority of teachers working in Türkiye stated that the curriculum is suitable for inclusive education, whereas most teachers working in Germany considered it inadequate in this regard. Similarly, the majority of teachers in both countries stated that secondary education English textbooks are inadequate in terms of inclusive education. Moreover, teachers’ suggestions for effective inclusive education were grouped under four sub-themes: suggestions for the education system, schools, teaching practices, and parental involvement.
