Abstract

Higher education plays a critical role in knowledge production, development, and social progress worldwide, while being influenced by rapid advancements in globalization and communication technologies. This transformation necessitates that higher education institutions and individuals renew themselves and adapt to evolving dynamics. This study examines individual capacity-building methods implemented in higher education institutions, based on the perspectives of experienced academic staff working in foundation universities, and provides recommendations derived from the findings. Adopting a qualitative research approach with a phenomenological design, the study involved five academic staff members from five different foundation universities in Ankara, selected for their relevant experience. Data were collected during the 2023-2024 academic year through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results indicate that individual capacity-building activities improve education, teaching, and research quality, support the production of qualified graduates, foster endogenous growth, and contribute to the sustainability of institutional operations. Enhanced knowledge, skills, and competencies of employees are also seen as contributing to societal and environmental benefits, as well as national and international policies and collaborations. This study is expected to provide valuable insights for future individual and institutional capacity-building efforts.
