Abstract

This study examines the happiness levels of women participating in sports and recreational activities in relation to certain variables. The study’s value lies in examining happiness among women participating in the municipality’s activities in relation to variables such as activity type, participation duration, employment status, marital status, and parenthood. This provides practical insights for planning courses that increase sustainable participation. The research used a descriptive survey model. The study group consisted of 452 women participating in culture and sports centers affiliated with the Izmit Municipality in Kocaeli Province. The women were selected using the criterion sampling method. The “Oxford Happiness Scale,” which was adapted and validated in Turkish, was used as the data collection tool in the study. The “Personal Information Form” prepared by the researchers was used to collect the participants’ personal information. Since the research data showed a normal distribution, parametric tests such as t-tests and One Way ANOVA were used. The results revealed that the women’s happiness levels were above average. The participants’ average happiness score was 4.37. Happiness scores were not significantly different according to activity type, employment status, marital status, or number of children. However, a significant difference in happiness levels was found based on the duration of course attendance: women who participated in the activities for 12 months or more reported higher happiness levels than those who participated for 0–6 months. In conclusion, the level of happiness was found to be above average, and the determining factor that increased happiness was the duration of course attendance.
