Abstract

Traditional historiography approaches the history of science and thought by focusing on specific civilizations and cultural spheres. However, this perspective ignores the history that occurred outside of the processes that shaped European civilization. This problem also prevails to Turkish-Islamic thought and the history of science and philosophy. This article aims to highlight this issue and propose solutions to overcome it. Subsequently, the discussion focused on how a methodology and style could be developed specifically for Turkish-Islamic thought and the history of science. Today, it is more acceptable to view science as “the consensus of the scientific community”. Based on this acceptance, Thomas Kuhn’s understanding of the history and sociology of science provides a helpful perspective for research on Turkish-Islamic thought and the history of science. However, it is prudent to avoid adhering to a single interpretation, as this would prevent us from reading the history of Turkish-Islamic science on its own terms. The primary question that needs to be addressed and the problem that requires a solution is how Turkish-Islamic thought and science can be understood within their own context, which necessitates new explorations beyond existing findings. As part of our analytical efforts in this article, Teoman Duralı’s concept of philosophy-science has been examined, and it has been demonstrated that the concept of “philosophy-science” presents a picture consistent with contemporary readings of the history of science and is favorable expression for the writing of Turkish-Islamic thought and the history of science.
