Abstract

This study aims to examine how sports contribute to the cognitive, emotional, behavioral, social, and political empowerment processes of individuals with disabilities within the framework of empowerment theory. While empowerment theory in the disability literature has predominantly been examined through isolated dimensions, studies addressing sports as a multidimensional and holistic mechanism of empowerment for individuals with disabilities remain limited. A qualitative research design was adopted, and data were obtained from a secondary qualitative data source consisting of publicly available podcast recordings. The dataset comprised podcast recordings of 66 athletes with disabilities who participated in the Sıra Dışı Hayatlar program broadcast on NTV Radio between 2020 and 2025. The data were collected through document analysis and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that sports promote cognitive empowerment by enhancing self-awareness, self-efficacy, and perceptions of life, while also strengthening self-esteem and emotional resilience and fostering independent living skills and social participation. Furthermore, sports were found to contribute to social and political empowerment through the development of communication skills, social networks, public visibility, and rights advocacy. This study makes an original contribution to the literature by conceptualizing sports as a holistic social work intervention that supports the empowerment of individuals with disabilities across the cognitive, emotional, behavioral, social, and political dimensions of empowerment theory. In addition, it provides a methodological contribution by demonstrating the applicability of publicly available podcast narratives as a secondary qualitative data source in social work research.
