Abstract

The Quran, whose lexical meanings include to gather, to read and to preserve knowledge in the mind is the miraculous speech revealed by Allah to the Muhammad, through the angel Gabriel. This miraculous word, which was revealed as the final divine book for all humanity, is in the Arabic language. These fundamental characteristics of the Quran have made its translation into other languages a necessity and as a result, the holy book of Islam has been translated into many languages. One of the oldest languages into which the Quran has been translated is Turkish. The activity of translating the Quran into Turkish began with the conversion of the Turks to Islam during the Karakhanid Period and continued without interruption throughout the Seljuk, Ottoman and Republican eras. Over this long span of time, hundreds of Quran translations in various forms have been produced. Among these types of translation -mostly related to the field of tafsir within Islamic sciences- interlinear (word-for-word) and verse-form translations have also made it necessary to treat the subject from a literary perspective. Especially interlinear Quran translations from the early periods of Turkish literature and the partial or complete verse-form translations of later periods hold great importance in terms of the history of the Turkish language and literature. This article will focus on the activities concerning the translation of the Quran into Turkish and will provide information about seven complete verse-form translations produced during the Republican Period.
