The mediating role of psychological resilience in the relationship between social media addiction and traumatic stress

Abstract

The investigation of the mediating role of psychological resiliency in the relationship between social media addiction and secondary traumatic stress is determined as the main aim of this study. In addition, investigation of the relations between the mentioned three variables is aimed. The “Social Media Addiction Scale-Adult form”, “Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale for Social Media Users”, “The Brief Psychological Resilience Scale” and “Demographic Form” was used for data collection. Purposive Sampling method was used and data collected from 513 volunteered participants with 18-26 age range. It was found that the “social media addiction” could explain the %32 of the variance for “secondary traumatic stress”. It is revealed with the results that “social media addiction predicting secondary traumatic stress (in positive direction) and “psychological resilience” is a partial mediator in the mentioned relationship. According to the results of analyses, it is possible to conclude that social media could be an important factor related with secondary traumatic stress. According to the study results, the usage frequency of social media is found as an important factor. The results point out the importance of planning community based interventions to increase psychological resilience especially for younger population.
