Abstract

This research reflects the analysis of Ertem Eğilmez's "Sürtük" film with the folklore-centered cinema approach. The film was discussed within the framework of the image, sound and text-centered approach in the context of the folklore-centered cinema approach developed by Ahmet Özgür Güvenç. The aim of this study is to reveal the cultural elements of the 1970 film Sürtük, directed by Ertem Eğilmez. For this purpose, the film was analysed using the content analysis method. It was noticed that image-centred elements were included in the film under certain headings. In the context of sound-centred approach, lyrics and music elements, especially in connection with the subject of the film, came to the fore, while natural and artificial sounds remained more limited. In the context of the text-centred approach, the film was inspired by the the Pygmalıon play written by Bernard Shaw, the play ‘Sürtük’ written by Mahmut Yesari and the period entertainment culture and period understanding of cinema. Thus, Ertem Eğilmez, who is one of the representatives of cultural memory in Turkish cinema, has included cultural elements extensively as in many of his other films.
