Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the role of sports in the social skill development of individuals with disabilities. Social skills are critical for individuals to adapt to society and express themselves effectively. For individuals with disabilities, social skills contribute to a more active and independent life within the community. However, physical or mental disabilities can make it challenging to build social relationships and participate in society. In this context, understanding how sports support social skill development for individuals with disabilities is an essential research topic. This study investigates how sports impact the self-confidence, leadership skills, and capacity to build social relationships of individuals with disabilities. The importance of this research lies in identifying methods that can support the social integration of individuals with disabilities in society and providing suggestions to improve their quality of life. Additionally, the perceptions of society toward disabled individuals participating in sports are discussed, addressing potential contributions to reducing social prejudices. The findings indicate that sports play a significant role in enhancing the social skills of individuals with disabilities. Specifically, team sports were observed to increase the participation of individuals with disabilities in group work, thereby developing skills such as empathy and cooperation. Furthermore, individual sports contributed to increased self-confidence, enabling them to communicate more comfortably in social settings. A positive change in societal perceptions towards disabled individuals engaging in sports was also identified. In conclusion, sports can be considered a valuable tool in promoting the social skill development of individuals with disabilities. Participation in sports activities facilitates the active and independent roles of individuals with disabilities within society, reduces social isolation, and supports their integration into the community. These findings suggest the need for policies and programs to encourage the participation of individuals with disabilities in sports activities.
