Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of positional differences on proprioceptive abilities in football players. Proprioception refers to an individual’s ability to perceive the position and movement of the body and the forces acting on the musculoskeletal system. It plays a vital role in motor control, balance, posture, and injury prevention. In multidirectional, high-intensity sports like football, a well-developed proprioceptive capacity is critical for both performance enhancement and injury prevention. A total of 40 male athletes from the U17 and U19 age groups of a professional football club’s youth academy in Samsun voluntarily participated in the study. Demographic and anthropometric data were collected, and proprioceptive ability was assessed using a repeated passive joint positioning test focused on the elbow joint. Statistical analyses revealed no significant differences between age groups in terms of anthropometric variables, although the U19 group had higher average values across all parameters. Additionally, no statistically significant differences were found in proprioceptive abilities across player positions. The findings suggest that age and physical characteristics alone are not sufficient to determine proprioceptive capacity. Instead, individual training content, motor learning processes, and physiological adaptations are likely to play more critical roles. These results emphasize the importance of regular proprioceptive assessment in youth athletes and highlight the need for individualized training and rehabilitation programs tailored to the specific developmental needs of players. Further studies with larger sample sizes and position-specific analysis are recommended to contribute to a deeper understanding of proprioceptive development in football.
