Traditional sports, cultural identity and heritage: A bibliometric analysis
Abstract
This study aims to reveal the structure, development trends, and conceptual orientations of the literature on traditional sports and games in relation to cultural identity and cultural heritage. In this context, studies indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection database were examined using the bibliometric analysis method. The dataset was analyzed through the R programming language and the bibliometrix package. Within the scope of the study, citation trends over the years, most productive authors, country distribution, keyword frequencies, co-occurrence networks, and thematic map analyses were conducted. The findings indicate that the literature follows a development pattern characterized by gradual growth without being dominated by a single academic center. Keyword and network analyses show that studies are shaped around cultural identity, social participation, and community-based processes. Thematic map findings further suggest that the field continues to develop through established themes while also expanding toward emerging research areas. Overall, the results demonstrate that the literature on traditional sports and games has a multidimensional, interdisciplinary, and evolving structure.
