The examination of the attitudes of Science High school students towards physical education course; Example of Malatya Province

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the differences in attitudes toward physical education among Science High School students based on specific demographic and personal characteristics. The study included (n=312) students attending three different science high schools in Malatya Province at Turkiye, during the 2017-18 academic year. The two-part study used the physical education attitude scale. Data were analyzed using the SPSS statistical package program, and statistical analyses included independent samples t-tests and one-way ANOVA with a normal distribution. The survey findings indicated that 48% of the participants were boys and 51% were girls. In study, 34% were student on a school team, 66% were not on a school team, and 92% participated in sports. Significant differences were found among science high school students based on gender, whether they participated in sports actively, and school type. Consequently, science high school students’ general attitudes toward physical education were found to be positive. The study concluded that boys’ students were more enthusiastic about physical education than girls’ students, and those who participated in sports were more enthusiastic about physical education than those who did not. Furthermore, it was determined that students’ attitudes toward physical education decreased as their grades increased. This could be attributed to their studying for the higher education entrance exam.
