An examination of the social skills levels of athletes and sedentary international high school students

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to compare the socialization levels of athletic and sedentary international high school students. The research method was determined as a relational screening model. The study sample consisted of (n=261) international male students studying at International Şehit Ömer HALISDEMİR Anatolian High School (Kayseri province Türkiye) during the 2017-2018 academic year. Data analysis was performed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for normal distribution. The independent samples t-test was used for comparisons of two independent groups, and One-way ANOVA was used for comparisons involving more than two independent groups. Post hoc and Tukey methods were used for intergroup differences. The statistical analysis of the data used TURCOSA software (Turcosa Analytics Ltd., Turkey www.teosa.com.tr). Statistical significance (p < 0.05) was considered. Significant differences were found between student athletes and non-athletes in the study. Students who participate professionally in sports have significantly higher social skills than those who do not participate in sports activities. Consequently, students who participate in sports activities are observed to be better at communicating with friends and establishing social relationships. Students who participate in sports activities have also been found to have higher socialization levels than inactive students.
