Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine what leisure time means for individuals working as teachers and to examine the relationship between working hours and leisure time with different demographic variables. 206 teachers (153 women and 53 men) working as teachers in schools selected from 7 regions of Türkiye participated in the study. In addition to questions about demographic information such as gender and age, “The Meaning of Leisure Scale” and “Work-Leisure Conflict Scale” were used as data collection tools. In the analysis of the data, percentage frequency values, independent sample t test, one-way analysis of variance ANOVA, LSD Post hoc tests, Pearson correlation test and regression analysis were used. In the current study, the internal reliability coefficients were determined as ,87 for the Meaning of Leisure Time Scale and ,80 for the Work-to-Leisure Conflict Scale. According to the findings, it was determined that the mean of the Meaning of Leisure Scale (4,39±0,46) was at a high level and the mean of the Work-Leisure Conflict Scale (4,75±1,11) was at a medium level. It was found that the levels of teachers' Meaning of Leisure Scale and Work-Leisure Conflict Scale differed significantly according to age, weekly work intensity, regular participation in leisure activities, and spending leisure time efficiently, and the meaning of leisure time explained 29% of work-leisure conflict. It can be stated that leisure time is a meaningful concept for teachers, that they need leisure time and that there is an average level of conflict between leisure time and work time, and accordingly, teachers need more leisure time.
