Abstract

In this study, it was aimed to provide a scientific contribution to educational policies and school-based intervention programs by examining the effects of school sports on students’ internet addiction and perceived stress levels. A quantitative research method based on the descriptive survey model was used in the study. The sample consisted of a total of 624 secondary school students, including 334 males and 290 females, studying in the central districts affiliated with the Van Provincial Directorate of National Education. The Personal Information Form, Internet Addiction Scale, and Perceived Stress Scale were used as data collection tools. Since the data did not show a normal distribution, the Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis H test, and Spearman correlation test were applied in the analyses. The significance level was accepted as p < 0.05. The research findings revealed significant differences/relationships between participation in school sports and students’ internet addiction and stress levels. In addition, differences between groups were observed in terms of variables such as gender, family support, socioeconomic status, and individual characteristics. It was determined that overweight students had higher stress levels, while students with low academic achievement had higher internet addiction. The findings obtained emphasize not only the physical but also the psychosocial benefits of school sports and indicate the importance of digital balance, family-school cooperation, and conscious technology use. These results reveal the necessity of supporting sports more effectively in educational policies.
