Investigation of the effect of speed, agility and quickness training on the performance values of young football players

Abstract

The physical characteristics of football players have become prominent in recent years, revealing the importance of the physical development of the players and the need for improved variety in training programs. It is essential to develop speed, agility, and quickness (SAQ) in the players to gain an edge over the opponents. This study aimed to examine the effect of SAQ training on the performance of young football players as they increase their development of these characteristics. The study comprised 24 football players, 17–19 years old, who voluntarily participated. The players were divided into two groups as SAQ training group (SAQTG, n = 12) and traditional training group (TTG, n = 12) and administered 10-m and 30-m speed tests (STs), agility T test (ATT), and hexagon agility test (HAT) before and after the training sessions. In the statistical analyses of the data, the paired sample T test was used in the intragroup pre- and posttest comparisons, and the repeated measures analysis of variance test was used to find the differences between the groups. Based on the analyses, a positive significant difference was noted in all values measured in SAQTG; in TTG, there was a positive significant difference in the 30-m ST, ATT, and HAT, but no significant difference in the 10-m ST. There was no significant difference between the groups in the 10-m ST; however, SAQ was significantly more effective than traditional training in the 30-m ST, ATT, and HAT. Considering the results, the SAQ and traditional training methods applied to football players for 8 weeks significantly improved the performances of the players; however, the SAQ had a more significant effect on performance than the traditional training method.
