Abstract

Since the attitudes of sports instructors are a determining factor in the participation of individuals with disabilities in sports, the need for this study was felt. The research aimed to compare the attitudes of students and graduates of the Department of Exercise and Sports Sciences for the Disabled (EESB) and Physical Education Teaching (BEÖ) towards the participation of individuals with disabilities in sports. The study group consisted of 293 students (EESB=184, BEÖ=109) who participated voluntarily from İstanbul Gelisim, Muş Alparslan and Inonu Universities. A personal information form and "Attitude Scale Towards the Participation of Individuals with Special Needs in Physical Activity" were used to collect data. The research was designed with the general screening model, which is one of the quantitative research methods. Data were analyzed in SPSS 24.0 program, since the data were normally distributed, independent samples t-test and one-way ANOVA were used, and Tukey HSD post-hoc test was used for multiple comparisons (p<.05). Scale scores of EESB students; It was found that the cognitive, affective, and behavioral subscales, as well as the total score, were significantly higher than the BEÖ. It was determined that students' attitudes increased as their age and grade level increased, and that those who had individuals with disabilities in their environment or class and who had previously engaged individuals with disabilities in sports had more positive attitudes across all dimensions. Consequently, it is recommended that course content and applied and adapted sports training for individuals with disabilities be increased in BEÖ programs, that teacher candidates' interaction with individuals with disabilities be increased during the education process, and that priority be given to the employment of EESB graduates in the field of sports instruction in special education schools.
