Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the ethical dimension of doping among athletes and to highlight its negative impact on justice, integrity, and fair competition in the sporting environment. The research was designed using a qualitative approach. Written sources obtained from the field were reviewed, and the data were collected and analyzed. Document analysis, a qualitative research method, allows for the systematic and rigorous evaluation of written materials. This method involves the comprehensive examination of both printed and digital sources. Like other qualitative approaches, document analysis seeks to interpret data, develop an understanding of the subject, and generate empirical knowledge. Given its nature, sport inherently involves experiences of winning and losing, which can, in some cases, create conditions for unethical behavior. Athletes’ inability to appropriately manage the desire to win may lead to unethical actions, namely behaviors that violate the principle of fair play. Such actions can result in unfair advantages. Sportsmanship is reflected in behaviors such as ensuring equal opportunities, avoiding unfair advantages, not perceiving opponents as enemies, cooperating and fostering team spirit, and embracing friendship and empathy. This study demonstrates that doping among athletes negatively affects the principles of justice, integrity, and fair competition. The findings indicate that doping and other unethical practices undermine fair play and the moral values of sports. For sport to be conducted in a healthy manner at both individual and societal levels, adherence to ethical principles is essential. Therefore, educational and awareness programs aimed at enhancing athletes’ ethical awareness are of critical importance.
