Abstract
Bu makale, Güney Sibirya, Kuzey Moğolistan ve Kuzeydoğu Çin’de yerleşik bir Moğol-Türk etnik grubu olan Buryatların geleneksel spor müsabakalarının tarihsel ve güncel biçimlerinin dini yönlerini sunmaktadır. Hem tarihsel olarak hem de günümüzde, geleneksel sporları şamanik ritüellerle yakından bağlantılıdır. Bu makale, Buryat şaman ritüelleri için bu Yord (yaylak, yazlık oba) spor müsabakalarının işlevlerine; neden bu ritüellerin kaçınılmaz bir parçası olduklarına ve olmaya devam ettiklerine dair içgörüler sunmaktadır. Buryatların ruhlarını ve tanrılarını kandırmayı ve/veya memnun ederek onlardan hayatta kalmak için gerekli olanı almayı amaçlayan bu ritüellerde önemli bir rol oynadıklarına inanılmaktadır. Buryatların hayal ettikleri ruhani varlıklarla olan ilişkilerine dair kurgularında meydana gelen büyük tarihsel değişimler ve buna bağlı olarak spor müsabakalarındaki değişimler anlatılmaktadır. Hem ekonomik değişimlerin (ağırlıklı olarak avcılıktan ağırlıklı olarak hayvancılığa) hem de dini inanç ve dünya görüşlerindeki değişimlerin (Şamanizm’den Budizm’e ve Sovyet Komünist taklit dininden Şamanizm ve Budizm’in Sovyet sonrası canlanmasına) etkileri anlatılmaktadır. Bu sporların Budist ve Şamanist ritüellerde oynadığı önemli rolün yakın zamanda yeniden canlanmasına özel bir önem verilmektedir.
