The effects of movement skills exercise program on the motor and attentional performance of individuals with intellectual disabilities

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of movement skills exercise program on motor and attention performance of people with intellectual disabilities. In the study, an 8-week movement training program was applied to the experimental group and a classical physical education program was applied to the control group while the effectiveness of these two training programs on the body composition, coordination, agility and attention characteristics of the participants was investigated. In the study, EZE children and their families were reached in Mersin province and voluntary participation of 40 EZE children aged between 10 and 20 years was ensured with the consent forms given by their families. Twenty of the participants were formed as experimental group (9 males, 11 females) and the other 20 were formed as control group (14 males, 6 females). In the study, two groups, one experimental group and the other control group, were formed by random assignment in the pretest-posttest control group model. The results of this study showed that only the throwing and catching test result between the experimental and control groups was greater in favor of the experimental group during the pretest in male and female adolescents. During the post-test, between the experimental and control groups in both sexes, the Burdon's attention test was greater in favor of the experimental group and the slalom test was greater in favor of the control group. As a result, the 8-week movement training program had a low effect on the body mass index, a moderate effect on slalom skills, and a large effect on throwing-catching and Burdon attention test in EZE men, while it had a low effect only on the Burdon test in men with different exercise programs.
