The mediating role of psychological capital in the relationship between burnout and performance: A research on the wrestling coaches

The aim of this research is to examine the mediating role of psychological capital in the relationship between burnout and performance in wrestling coaches. The participants of the study were 160 volunteer wrestling coaches aged between 20-64 (38.47±8.36), 85% of whom were male and 15% of whom were female. The data were collected from the participants face-to-face and online on a voluntary basis by convenience sampling method at the Turkish Wrestling Championships organized within the scope of the Turkish Wrestling Federation 2023 annual program. Psychological Capital Questionnaire Short Form (PCQ-12), Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), Job Performance Scale Short Form (JPS) and Personal Information Form were used as data collection tools. The confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to test the scales. The mediation role was analyzed using Hayes SPSS PROCESS macro (Model 4). According to the results, burnout has a negative effect on performance and psychological capital, whereas psychological capital has a positive effect on performance. According to the upper and lower limits of Bootstrap confidence intervals, the mediating effect of psychological capital on the relationship between burnout and performance was found to be significant. As a conclusion, while burnout decreases coaches' performance, psychological capital increases it. At the same time, psychological capital plays a mediating role in increasing performance by reducing the negative effect of burnout on performance.
