Abstract

Unlike other books, Turkish textbooks do not focus on the transfer of knowledge. Therefore, they are not knowledge-specific books. Instead of teaching a specific subject, these books are expected to improve students’ skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, applying grammar rules, etc. Therefore, the books contain texts that attract the students’ attention and encourage them to read, write, speak or listen. These texts can be on various topics ranging from Turkish culture to sports, from travelling to air pollution. This study was conducted to determine how and to what extent sports are used in Turkish textbooks to improve students’ language skills. For this purpose, the content analysis of the book sent to schools by the Ministry of National Education for the 5th grade Turkish course in 2022-2023 was conducted. In this content analysis, sport was considered in a broad sense, including branches such as basketball, football, athleticism, and traditional games. As a result of the research, it was found that the selection of texts for Turkish textbooks often favoured texts with sports content, including well-known sports such as basketball and swimming, as well as lesser-known sports such as bullfighting. The texts do not teach these sports directly. Instead, in existing reading texts or course activities, the subject of sport is used to initiate, develop, illustrate or reflect a situation in the text. In this way, it enables students to easily match the lesson with their daily lives and favourite occupations and motivates them to Turkish activities.
