The role and importance of ethical principles in professional relationships with clients in social work practice

The discipline of social work is based on three fundamentals: knowledge, skills and values. Among these three fundamentals, values are of central importance in the ethical practice of the profession. This study aims to reveal the role and importance of social work ethical principles in the professional relationship established with clients. In this study, which adopted the phenomenological design from qualitative research methods, semi-structured interviews were conducted with specialists working in the fields of medical social work, child welfare, women’s services, services for the disabled and elderly, and forensic social work. The data obtained were evaluated using thematic analysis, and four main themes were identified: “the process of establishing a professional relationship with the client”, “the role of social work ethical principles in social work intervention”, “ethical dilemmas and coping methods” and “suggestions for more effective application of ethical principles”. The findings revealed that social service professionals must strictly adhere to ethical principles to establish a trust-based relationship with clients. Additionally, it was determined that violating ethical boundaries undermines client trust and has a detrimental impact on the profession's reputation. As a result, it is thought that a practice based on ethical principles strengthens the relationship with the client and increases the effectiveness of social work.
