Abstract

This study aims to support the social skills of preschool age children through rhythm-based music activities. A mixed method was implemented in the study. The quantitative dimension used a quasi-experimental design, while the qualitative dimension employed a case study. In the study group, there were 48 children, including 24 in the experimental group and 24 in the control group, who attended a kindergarten affiliated with the Ministry of National Education. In the quantitative dimension, HTKS and SCBE-30 scales were applied, while the qualitative dimension included child and teacher interview questions developed by the author, and field notes. In the data analysis, the difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of the groups was investigated with the Mann-Whitney U and t Test according to whether the normality assumptions were met. The pre-test-post-test score difference of the children in the experimental and control groups was examined with the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. For the qualitative data of the study, a descriptive analysis was conducted for the responses given by the children to the questions posed. The findings were supported by teacher interviews and field notes. According to the findings of the study, while no significant difference was observed in the pre-test scores of the children in the research group, a significant difference was found in favor of the experimental group in the post-test scores of the BADO and SYDD-30 scales, except for the anxiety-introversion score. Also, there was an increase in the positive responses of the children in the experimental group to social skills.
