Reading social exclusion through poverty, employment and unemployment: A research on selected EU member countries

Abstract

Social exclusion is a situation arising from individuals’ inability to participate in employment and access basic economic resources. Factors such as unemployment, inability to secure employment, and poverty carry the risk of leading to social exclusion. Individuals who experience income loss or job loss participate less in social spheres and feel excluded. The main objective of this study is to examine social exclusion in relation to poverty, employment, and unemployment. The study was conducted on selected EU member countries using Eurostat and World Bank data from the 2015-2024 period. Tables were created based on statistical data and interpreted as descriptive analysis. According to the findings of the study, the percentage of people living at risk of poverty and social exclusion in Bulgaria, Hungary, and Romania is higher than in other EU member states. On the other hand, it was found that in the Czech Republic, Slovenia, and On the other hand, it was found that the proportion of people living at risk of poverty and social exclusion in the Czech Republic, Slovenia, and Romania, respectively, is much lower than in other EU member countries. Therefore, increasing employment opportunities and intensifying poverty reduction policies in countries will be of great importance to reduce or eliminate social exclusion.
