Abstract

Research indicates that athletes with high levels of mental resilience and emotional intelligence demonstrate stronger abilities in coping with stress and challenges, focusing on goals, and displaying flexibility. The purpose of this study is to examine the levels of emotional intelligence and mental resilience of university students who actively participate in sports, based on gender, age of involvement in sports, and weekly training frequency. This research is a descriptive study. The population of the study consists of university students who actively participate in sports. The sample consists of university students who are enrolled in Adıyaman, Gümüşhane, Artvin Çoruh, and Bayburt Universities during the 2022-2023 academic year and indicate their active participation in sports. A total of 436 university students, with a mean age of 21.69±1.55, voluntarily participated in the study, including 147 (33.7%) females and 289 (66.3%) males. Participants were included in the study through convenience sampling. The Sport Mental Resilience Scale and the Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale were used in the research. T-test and one-way ANOVA were employed for data analysis.
The findings of this study indicate significant differences in the levels of mental resilience and emotional intelligence among university students who engage in regular physical activity, based on gender, sport age, and weekly training frequency variables. Specifically, the results favor male participants in terms of gender, participants with older sport age, and participants who engage in more frequent training sessions.
