DETERMINING THE OPINIONS OF CANOA AND WRESTLING ATHLETES ON DOPING AND ERGOGENIC SUPPORT

In competitive sports such as canoeing and wrestling, the tendency to doping and ergogenic supports is increasing to gain superiority over the opponent and increase performance. This study aimed to determine the opinions of canoe and wrestling athletes about doping and ergogenic support. A total of 100 volunteer athletes from various cities of Turkey (Artvin, Trabzon, Adana, Sakarya, Şanlıurfa) from canoeing (39) and wrestling (61) branches participated in the study. In addition to demographic characteristics, a questionnaire consisting of 55 questions in total prepared by Eröz (2007) was used in the study. The α=0.916 of the questionnaire was found to be reliable. The data were analyzed by percentage and frequency analysis. It was found that 83% of the athletes were male, 17% were female; 10% of the participants were in primary school, 69% was in high school and 21% was university graduate; in income status, 19% were had between 1000-1500 TL, 22% were had between 1501-3000 TL l, 29% were had between 3001-5000 TL, 30% were had 5000 TL and above; in sports experience, 36% were in their 1-3 years, 30% were in 4-7 years, 22% were in 8-11 years, 12% were 12 and more. Moreover, 17% of athletes had a history of TOHM, 83% did not have a history of TOHM; 61% wrestling, 39% canoeing and 42% juniors, 34% stars, 24% seniors. Regarding the level of knowledge of the athletes about doping in sports and the types of doping used, "I agree" to the 1st question, 'absolutely agree' to the 2nd question, "absolutely disagree" to the 3-4-9. questions, "neutral" to the 5-6-7-8-10-11 were given to the questions. In the questions of knowledge and level of use about ergogenic aid, participants answered "absolutely disagree" to questions 1-2-3-4-5-8 and 11, "disagree" to question 6, and "neutral" to questions 7-9 and 10. Canoe athletes answered 'I agree' to questions 1-2 about the statements and 'Absolutely disagree' to the other statements; wrestling athletes answered "I agree" to the 1st question about the statements, "absolutely agree" to the 2nd question, and "neutral" to the other statements. Athletes gave a high percentage of "Absolutely disagree" answers to the questions on the reasons for choosing doping. Canoe athletes answered, 'absolutely disagree' to questions 1-2-3-4-5-8 and 11, 'agree-disagree' to question 6, and 'neutral' to questions 7-9 and 10; wrestling athletes, on the other hand, 'absolutely disagree' to questions 1- 2-3-4-5, 'absolutely disagree-disagree' to question 11, 'disagree' to question 6, and 'absolutely disagree-neutral' to question 8 and they answered 'neutral' to questions 7- 9 and 10.
