AN OUTLOOK OF BALKAN WAR WITH A WIEV TO TOLSTOY AND DOSTOEVSKY’S COMMENTS ON IT

Abstract

Tolstoy didn’t plan to finish his novel “Anna Karenina” with the death of its protagonist on the rails, but with sending Vronsky to the front of the Ottoman-Russian war to attract his contemporaries’ attention towards it. On the other hand, in his book “A Writer’s Diary” his contemporary Dostoevsky, defended in conformity with his pan-slavist views the idea that Russia’s wish to build sovereignty over İstanbul was a necessity and criticized Tolstoy’s anti-war humanitarian approach towards it, which differed totally from that of his compatriots. On this study, the different points of view of the constantly compared great writers Tolstoy and Dostoevsky towards the Ottoman-Russian war have been dealt with.
