Abstract

Improving students’ vocabulary is one of the main goals of programs and language teaching within the scope of vocabulary teaching in language teaching environments. In accordance with this main goal, different orientations have emerged for enhancing the vocabulary. One of those orientations is the determination of word frequencies. When determining the word frequencies by grade levels, it is extremely important to identify the frequencies of words mentioned in textbooks which are often used by students. By determining which words are frequently used in the texts of textbooks, with which words students are brought together will be revealed, and in case there is a change by grade levels, the direction of improvement/deterioration of this change can be determined. Word frequencies and word numbers of the text selected randomly in the (5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade) Turkish lesson textbooks were determined, and changes which occurred by grade levels (frequency and word average) were described.
