Abstract

This phenomenological research aims to identify the adaptation problems of Meskhetian Turkish women working in the Beauty and Personal Care Sector in Bursa province by revealing their participation and adaptation to the labor market. The purpose of this study is to identify integration challenges faced by these women. The interviews were conducted with 20 Meskhetian Turkish women using a semi-structured format comprising 19 questions. The collected data were transcribed and analyzed through content analysis, resulting in 27 categories under 9 themes with 493 codes. Findings reveal that Meskhetian Turkish women migrated to Turkey due to discrimination and exclusion in their countries of origin, as well as to fulfill specific social needs. Factors such as perceptions of a feminine and universal profession, vocational training in post-Soviet countries, and personal interests/talents facilitate their employment in BPCS. These women believe that the Beauty and Personal Care Sector in Turkey is underdeveloped and that expertise from Meskhetian professionals is essential. Key factors facilitating their integration include professional competence, the perception of BPCS as a feminine profession, cultural and linguistic similarities with the Turkish population, and higher earnings compared to other sectors. Despite their general satisfaction with their profession, Meskhetian Turkish women face challenges such as difficulties in obtaining diploma equivalence, residence permits, and citizenship, which complicate their integration into the labor market.
