Examination of the relationship between mindfulness and digital addiction in students athletes

Mindfulness refers to the ability of individuals to accept the present moment and focus their attention. This concept can play an important role in stress management and developing psychological resilience. The aim of the study is to determine the effects of mindfulness levels of student athletes on digital addiction and in this context, to reveal the relationships between athletes' digital media use and mindfulness practices. In the study, quantitative research design was used in the relational screening model. The population of the study consists of students studying in higher education institutions providing sports education. The sample of the study consists of 321 students selected by convenience sampling method from the sampling. In the study, data collection tool was created by using Personal Information Form, Athlete Mindfulness Scale and Digital Addiction Scale. It was determined that the participants had high levels of mindfulness and medium levels of digital addiction. In addition, a significant and positive relationship was observed between these two variables. It is seen that there is no statistically significant difference in the mean scores of the Athlete Mindfulness Scale and Digital Addiction Scale according to gender, age, department and class variables. In addition, a significant difference was observed according to the leisure time evaluation status. It can be concluded that the time athlete students spend in digital environments enhances their level of awareness. It is also anticipated that participants may confuse the concepts of "awareness" and "addiction" It is recommended to provide guidance for student athletes to manage their time spent in digital environments more consciously in order to reduce digital addiction and increase awareness levels.
