Abstract

Speaking and listening are two skills essentially focused on in Turkish education system as they are capable to influence essentially the reading and writing skills in addition to success in work, family and society. Because of this importance in this study words about speaking and listening skills in Kutadgu Bilig have been discovered by means of document survey method. At the end of study it has been discovered that there are many statements in Kutadgu Bilig that can be used in listening and speaking teaching such as: “Don’t say a word much but on time and little, setle thousands of words in one word.”; “One cannot get master by talking much but listening much master becomes number one.”; “Do know that two types of person do not speak: one who does not know and the one who is deaf mute.”; “You said it too much, be careful, it should keep its freshness, too much talk bores people.”; “Listen to every single word but take the necessary ones only, leave the unnecessary ones there.” and from these words, it is stated that several rules may be elicited for speaking and listening teaching.
