Abstract

Social Studies course has a very important function in values education in primary education. The main purpose of this study is to determine how values education is carried out in the fifth grade Social Studies course in primary education. The study was designed as a holistic single case descriptive study based on unstructured observation. The study was conducted at a primary school in Eskisehir Province in the spring term of 2008-2009 educational year. The participants of the study were 9 female, 13 male students, and the teacher of 5th grade A. The data were gathered through “teacher personal information form” “student personal information form”, “unstructured observation”, “video recordings”, “semi-structured interviews”, and “researcher’s journal”. Inductive analysis was used in the study; the findings were determined and evaluated based on the research questions. It can be said that Social Studies course has a significant role in values education. However, collaboration of school, teacher, family and society is needed for much more effective process for values education.
