Abstract

In this study, worksheets are used in teaching the concepts of “Flag” and “Republic” in “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” theme of 3rd grade’s “Life Science” course. In this way, the effect of worksheets on the students' academic success and the students’ views in relation to the worksheets are tried to be uncovered. The population of the study consisted of 3rd grade students in Rize, and the sample of the study consisted of the students of 3A and 3B classes in Köprüköy Elementary School in Ardeşen, Rize. An experimental model with pre-test and post-test control group was used in the study. In addition, the students have been interviewed and content analysis of the findings acquired has been conducted in order to support quantitative data. As a result of the research, it has been found out that worksheets used in “Life Science” course increased the academic success of the students. The results of the interview have revealed that students liked worksheets, and they frequently needed assistance during the activities. The research have also revealed that worksheets which have been found to be contributing in learning, reviewing, and correcting some incorrect information may contribute the course to be likeable and increase the success in the class. In accordance to the results of the study, it has been suggested to extend the use of worksheets at and the different levels and courses; enrich the contents technically by supporting them with visuals; rearrange them in color.
