Examination of the motivation to participate in sports and recreational benefit levels of academic staff who do sports activities as recreational activities

Abstract

In this research, 365 Academicians working at Istanbul Topkapi University, Istanbul Gelisim University, Istanbul Kultur University and Istanbul Medipol University voluntarily participated in the study. In the study, the personal information form created by the researchers in the first part was used as a data collection. It was used “Participation of Motivation Questionnaire=PMQ” to measure the motivation of academicians to participate in sports. The scale consists of thirty items and eight sub-dimensions (Achievement/Status, Physical Fitness, Team Spirit, Friends, Entertainment, Competition, Skill Development, Movement/Activity). In the third part, the “Recreation Benefit Scale” (LBS) in order to determine the benefit levels of individuals in recreational activities was used. The data were collected online by applying the survey technique. T-test and ANOVA tests were used in the analysis of the obtained data. The difference between the variables was interpreted based on the p.0.05 significance level. As a result of the findings obtained as a result of the study, it is seen that the motivation of the academicians to participate in sports is good and they have a high level of participation in sports. According to another result, in the comparison of the Gender of the academicians regarding the Incentive to Participate in Sports; It was observed that there was a significant difference in favor of male participants in the Achievement/Status sub-dimension. In the comparison of the Recreational Benefit regarding the titles of the academicians, it was observed that the mean score of the Professor participants in the Social Benefit sub-dimension was significantly higher than the Research Assistant participants (p<0,05).
