Organizational myopia in the framework of leadership orientations: A study of sports managers

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the leadership orientations of sports managers and organizational myopia. The study involved 178 sports managers working in sports clubs affiliated with the Türkiye Aydın Amateur Sports Clubs Federation. The data collection tools included a demographic questionnaire covering the sports managers' age, sports background, coaching experience, and management experience, as well as the Leadership Orientation Scale and the Organizational Myopia Scale. The normality assumptions of the data were assessed by examining the skewness and kurtosis values, which confirmed the normal distribution. Independent samples t-tests, Pearson correlation analysis, and Spearman correlation analysis (for examining the relationship between continuous and ordinal variables under the assumption of non-normal distribution of ordinal variables) were employed. The study found a negative relationship between sports managers' age and years of experience (in sports, coaching, and management) and organizational myopia. It was also discovered that sports managers with sports and coaching experience exhibited lower structural leadership orientations, but higher political and symbolic leadership orientations. Additionally, the levels of organizational myopia in sports managers showed a positive relationship with structural leadership orientation and a negative relationship with human resources, political, and symbolic leadership orientations. In conclusion, the structural approach tends to increase organizational myopia, while human resources, approaches promoting reconciliation, and those reflecting team spirit contribute to the reduction of organizational myopia and support long-term sustainability.
